He says he is willing to impose tough sanctions if the Europeans will agree on imposing secondary sanctions on India and China. He knows that won’t happen and he therefore can blame the Europeans for his own unwillingness to get tough on Russia.

I cannot think of a single conflict that has been solved by sanction. Sanctions are a punishment akin to 20 lashes with a wet noodle. They are always easily evaded and usually damage the sanctioner almost as much as sanctioned. In the lead up to imposing sanctions their effect is routinely overestimated. Once imposed there are numerous carve-out and exceptions that makes them little more than a whimpish exclamation “You are a bad actor”. And they always lead to disagreements and strife among those who should impose sanctions, even if they agree on their intended purpose.

Why should the Europeans participate in an action that will hurt their good relations with, and profitable exports markets in a country like India?

Gimme a break. The plan for the US to impose sanctions if the Europeans are willing to sacrifice their good relations with India is simply a smokescreen for Trump’s unwillingness to confront the aggressor in this conflict.

If the US was really interested in restricting Russian exports of petroleum and petroleum products, there is a simple and straightforward way of doing it without pissing off India and the Europeans. Simply provide the necessary long-range weapons to Ukraine so that the Ukrainian army can intensify the attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure it is already carrying out. Ukraine is attacking refineries, pipelines and ports that are necessary for Russia to export oil. Providing the means so that Ukraine can intensify these attacks is the simplest and most cost-effective way of cutting of the income Russia needs to continue prosecuting this terrible war.

As a side benefit, it would open a big market for US energy exports, oil and LNG. India would be glad to purchase US energy, once cheap Russian supplies are no longer available. One could even consider making this more attractive for India by using the revenue from the Russan assets frozen in Western banks to subsidize the oil India buys from the US. If the US were to take the lead on a plan like this, I am sure the rest of the World would follow.

That would really Make America Great Again.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Donald Trump has found yet another way of avoid getting tough on Russia.
